Weeding

Before a redesign can happen the space needs to be cleaned up in order to see what we actually have and need to continue to service our patrons.

Below is the general collection analysis of the collection as of Dec 2, 2010.  Some weeding had already started before this date.

We had a chuckle regarding some of the books that were still in the collection.  School libraries are not museums.  The collection should reflect the curriculum as well as the interests of the students and faculty.  Examples of books that have outlived their usefulness include Soviet Union, a country that no longer exists, The Future of the Family, written in 1960 and Future Food, predictions regarding food for the year 2000.

The process of weeding is time and labor consuming.  At first, I would run reports by decades starting at 1940 and pulling books with copyright dates in the range selected.  That took a good deal of time.  Later, I settled on going through section by section and pulling books that by condition or title was outdated.  Each day there was a new pile of books waiting to be recycled.  The process was repeated with reference and videos.
